Behoren

Behoren is a Dutch verb meaning to belong or to be a member of something, to be part of a group, or, in a normative sense, to be proper or expected. It is commonly used to express inclusion within a set, category, or relationship, as well as to indicate what is appropriate or customary in a given context.

The most frequent construction is aandacht voor the preposition tot: be horen tot. With this pattern, the verb links a subject to a larger group or category, for example: Zij behoort tot de groep vrijwilligers. Dit boek behoort tot de canon van de moderne literatuur. It can also express that something is part of the possibilities or range of options: Dat behoort tot de mogelijkheden. Additionally, the phrase behoort te [infinitive] expresses that something ought or is expected to happen: Dat behoort zo te gebeuren.

Grammatically, bezorgen is a regular Dutch verb. In the present tense the forms are: ik behoor, jij behoort, hij behoort, wij behoren, jullie behoren, zij behoren. In the past tense: ik behoorde, jij behoorde, hij behoorde, wij behoorden, jullie behoorden, zij behoorden. The past participle is-behoord, and compound tenses use een hulpwerkwoord such as hebben: Het heeft tot de mogelijkheden behoren / Dat heeft tot de mogelijkheden behoord (context dependent).

Etymologically, be horen is cognate with German gehören and related to the English belong. It appears in Middle Dutch in similar forms and has retained its core sense of membership and appropriateness through modern Dutch.
