Befruchtungsfähig

Befruchtungsfähig is a German term describing the state of being able to undergo fertilization or to fertilize. In biology it is used to characterize cells, tissues or organisms that can participate in the union of male and female gametes, leading to a zygote. The concept is most commonly applied to gametes like sperm and oocytes, but it can also refer to reproductive specimens in plants.

In animals, befruchtungsfähig usually concerns gametes at the appropriate maturation stage. An oocyte is befruchtungsfähig when it has matured and is released during ovulation; it remains fertilizable for a limited time. Spermatozoa become befruchtungsfähig after maturation and can fertilize an ovum for a limited period after ejaculation, depending on the environment within the female reproductive tract.
