Beetahüdroksühape refers to a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of both a hydroxyl group (an alcohol functional group) and a carboxylic acid functional group on the beta-carbon atom relative to the carboxyl group. The "beta" designation indicates the position of the hydroxyl group three carbons away from the carbonyl carbon of the carboxylic acid. These compounds are also known as 3-hydroxy carboxylic acids.

A common and well-known example of a beta-hydroxy acid is beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), which is a ketone body produced in the liver during periods of low carbohydrate intake or prolonged fasting. BHB can be used by the body as an alternative fuel source to glucose, particularly by the brain. In the context of skincare, certain beta-hydroxy acids, like salicylic acid, are widely used due to their exfoliating properties. Salicylic acid's lipophilicity allows it to penetrate pores, making it effective for treating acne and other skin conditions. Other beta-hydroxy acids found in nature include malic acid, which is present in apples, and citric acid, found in citrus fruits, though these often have their hydroxyl group in different positions relative to the carboxyl group depending on the specific isomer.
