Bauchmitte

Bauchmitte is a German term that denotes the central part of the abdomen, the midline region between the left and right flanks. In everyday language it refers to the area around the center of the abdomen, and in medical contexts it is used to describe the central abdominal region where the body’s midline structures lie.

Anatomically, the Bauchmitte corresponds to the area along the linea alba, a fibrous seam that runs from the xiphoid process at the top of the sternum to the pubic symphysis at the bottom. The abdominal muscles—the external oblique, internal oblique, transversus abdominis, and rectus abdominis—form the lateral walls, while the linea alba marks the midline. The surface landmark closest to the true center is typically the umbilicus, though its exact position can vary between individuals.

Clinically, the Bauchmitte is relevant for several reasons. It is a common site for midline surgical incisions, such as the midline laparotomy, because it typically provides a relatively avascular path with straightforward closure and minimal disturbance to muscle tissue. Pathologies in this region include epigastric and umbilical hernias along the midline, as well as diastasis of the rectus abdominis, where the two sides separate along the linea alba.

In imaging and physical examination, the Bauchmitte serves as a reference point for assessing midline tenderness, masses, or hernias. In English-language medical terminology, this region would usually be described as the midabdomen or midline of the abdomen, with Bauchmitte functioning as its German counterpart.
