Batasuna

Batasuna was a Basque nationalist political coalition that existed from 2001 to 2012. It was formed by the merger of Herri Batasuna, Eusko Alkartasuna, and Aralar. Batasuna advocated for the independence of the Basque Country and a socialist political program.

The coalition's political activities were controversial due to its alleged links with ETA, a Basque separatist organization designated as a terrorist group by several countries. In 2003, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that Batasuna was an illegal organization, effectively banning it from participating in elections. Despite the ban, the coalition continued to operate underground and through various front organizations.

Batasuna's stated goal was to achieve a peaceful resolution to the Basque conflict and to establish an independent Basque state. However, its close association with ETA led to widespread condemnation and legal repercussions. The coalition faced internal divisions and external pressure throughout its existence.

In 2011, following ETA's declaration of a permanent ceasefire, Batasuna announced its dissolution. The following year, a new political party called Sortu was founded, aiming to continue the political legacy of Batasuna but without any association with violence. The dissolution of Batasuna marked a significant moment in the Basque political landscape, signaling a shift in the strategies of nationalist movements in the region.
