Basiswinkel

Basiswinkel is the German term for base angle in geometry. It denotes an angle located at the base of a figure, most commonly the two angles adjacent to the base of a triangle. In a triangle with base BC and apex A, the basiswinkel are the angles at B and C.

In isosceles triangles, the basiswinkel are equal because the sides opposite them are equal. If AB = AC, then the angles at B and C are congruent, and the apex angle is the angle at A opposite the base BC. Since the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180 degrees, each basiswinkel in an isosceles triangle equals (180° − apex angle)/2. This relationship is frequently used in angle-chasing and geometric constructions.

Beyond triangles, the term basis angle can apply to angles adjacent to a base side in polygons. For example, in a trapezoid, the base angles on the same base are supplementary, and in an isosceles trapezoid the base angles on the same base are equal. These properties arise from parallelism and side congruence and are used to deduce unknown angles or side lengths.

Etymology and use: Basiswinkel combines Basis (base) and Winkel (angle) and is standard in German-language geometry texts and curricula. The concept remains a basic tool for reasoning about triangle shapes, angle measures, and their relationships within Euclidean geometry.
