Baselkomitean

Baselkomitean is a term used to describe a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), an international forum of banking supervisors and central banks based in Basel, Switzerland. The committee, established in 1974 by the central bank governors of the G10, works to strengthen banking supervision worldwide by developing international standards and guiding principles.

Baselkomiteans participate in meetings and contribute to the drafting of Basel accords and related guidance. They represent their national authorities in discussions on capital adequacy, liquidity, risk management, governance, and supervisory practices. The committee seeks to achieve convergence in supervisory approaches and to reduce the likelihood of cross-border, systemic banking risks.

Decisions and standards produced by the BCBS are not legally binding in themselves; adoption and enforcement occur through national laws and regulations. Nevertheless, Basel standards are widely implemented by member jurisdictions and exert substantial influence on national regulatory frameworks.

Composition and process: Members are senior representatives from central banks and banking supervisory authorities from Basel Committee member jurisdictions. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) hosts the BCBS secretariat, facilitating meetings, research, and coordination. Work is often conducted through subgroups and working groups with transparent disclosure of guidance.

Notes: The term Baselkomitean is used primarily in some languages to denote a Basel Committee member and does not denote a separate title or office. The Basel Committee remains distinct from the political bodies of its member states and relies on national authorities for implementation.
