Bariumchloraat

Bariumchloraat is the chemical compound with the formula Ba(ClO3)2. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. Bariumchloraat is a powerful oxidizing agent, meaning it readily gives up oxygen to other substances, which can cause them to burn or explode. This property makes it useful in certain applications, but also dangerous if not handled with care.

The compound is typically produced by reacting barium chloride with sodium chlorate or by the electrolysis of barium chloride solutions. Bariumchloraat is known for its ability to produce a green color when used in pyrotechnics, such as fireworks and flares. This vibrant green hue is due to the characteristic emission spectrum of barium ions when heated.

Due to its oxidizing nature, bariumchloraat must be stored separately from combustible materials. Contact with reducing agents, organic compounds, or even finely powdered metals can lead to violent reactions. Ingestion of bariumchloraat is toxic and can cause serious health problems, primarily affecting the gastrointestinal tract and the cardiovascular system. Historically, it has found some limited use as a rat poison, but this application is now largely discontinued due to its toxicity and the availability of safer alternatives.
