Bardeenin

Bardeenin is a synthetic organic compound that has been studied for its electronic and optical properties. It belongs to the class of bicyclic amide compounds and features a fused aromatic core with a pendant amide group, giving it moderate electron-acceptor characteristics.

In solid form, Bardeenin is a light to off-white material with a melting point in the range of 185–210°C. It is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves in common organic solvents such as dichloromethane and toluene. The compound is stable under ambient conditions but hydrolyzes under strong acid or base.

Synthesis typically involves condensation of a substituted aniline derivative with a cyclic dicarbonyl compound to build the bicyclic core, followed by amidation to install the terminal amide. Variants of Bardeenin can carry substituents that tune solubility and electronic properties.

Applications studied for Bardeenin include its use as a donor–acceptor unit in organic photovoltaics and as a fluorescent probe due to emission in the visible region. It has also served as a model system for investigating π–π stacking and solid-state packing in crystalline films.

Safety and handling guidance align with standard practices for small organic molecules. There is limited toxicological data published, so routine laboratory precautions are advised, including ventilation, gloves, and eye protection. The first descriptions of Bardeenin appeared in the chemical literature in 2012.
