Balancat

Balancat is a Catalan term that generally means balanced, level, or in a state of equilibrium. It is the past participle of the verb balançar, which means to balance, to rock, or to tilt. In standard Catalan orthography the correct form is balançat, with the cedilla under the c; balancat (without diacritics) is a nonstandard ASCII variant found in older texts or in contexts where diacritics are not used.

Usage and senses

Balancat can function as an adjective or as a past participle in loaned or set phrases. As an adjective, it describes objects that have been brought into balance or are symmetrically arranged, as well as situations that are in a state of equilibrium. For example, a table that has been leveled might be described as una taula balançada; in non-diacritic texts this appears as una taula balancada. As a past participle, it appears in passive constructions or as a descriptor of a result, such as a budget balançat (balanced budget) or a sistema balançat (a balanced system).

In Catalan, the feminine form is balançada and the masculine balançat. The ASCII form balancat/balancada is commonly seen in simplified or non‑Catalan contexts, but balançat/balançada is preferred in standard Catalan spelling. The term is used across domains—from everyday objects and layouts to economic, technical, and design contexts—to convey a sense of equilibrium, even distribution, or stability.
