Bakteeriyhteistyö, also known as bacterial cooperation or bacterial mutualism, refers to interactions between bacteria that are mutually beneficial. These interactions can occur between individuals of the same species or between different species. Cooperation can manifest in various ways, such as the sharing of resources, the production of public goods, or the formation of complex multicellular structures.

One common form of bacterial cooperation involves the secretion of enzymes that break down complex molecules into smaller, usable nutrients. These nutrients can then be utilized by all members of the bacterial community, even those that did not produce the enzymes themselves. This creates a situation where some bacteria act as "specialists," investing energy in resource breakdown, while others act as "generalists," benefiting from the shared resources.

Another important aspect of bacterial cooperation is quorum sensing. This is a system of communication that allows bacteria to sense their population density. Once a certain threshold density is reached, bacteria can coordinate their gene expression and behavior, leading to collective actions such as the formation of biofilms. Biofilms are structured communities of bacteria encased in a self-produced matrix, which provides protection from environmental stresses and antimicrobial agents.

Bacterial cooperation also plays a crucial role in symbiotic relationships with other organisms. For example, bacteria in the human gut cooperate to digest food, synthesize vitamins, and protect against pathogens. Similarly, nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the root nodules of legumes cooperate with the plant by converting atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for the plant, while the plant provides them with a protected environment and nutrients. Understanding bacterial cooperation is essential for fields ranging from medicine and agriculture to environmental science and biotechnology.
