They are also employed in biotechnology for the synthesis of enzymes, antibiotics, and biofuels. In environmental remediation, bacteria can be utilized to clean up oil spills and toxic waste.

Conversely, some bacterial functions can be detrimental. Pathogenic bacteria cause diseases in humans, animals, and plants, leading to illness and economic losses. Understanding bacterial functions is therefore essential for both harnessing their beneficial activities and mitigating their harmful effects.
