Backline
Backline refers to the equipment used by performers on stage during a live performance, excluding the audience-facing sound system and lighting. The term originates from gear placed at the back of the stage. A typical backline includes amplifiers for guitar and bass, drum kits, keyboards and stage pianos, synthesizers, and related effects racks. It may also include percussion, mic stands, pedal boards, laptop or sampler rigs, and DI boxes used to connect instruments to the PA. In many cases, backline gear is provided by the venue, the tour, or a dedicated backline rental company, and is specified in a performer’s rider.
