BS4360

BS 4360 is a British Standard that was published for structural steel. It specified requirements for the manufacture, testing, and supply of a range of structural steel grades. The standard covered hot rolled steel sections, plates, bars, and hollow sections used in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other civil engineering structures.

The standard categorized steels into different grades based on their yield strength and other mechanical properties. These grades were designated by a number, such as 43A, 43C, 43D, 50B, 50C, and 50D, where the number indicated the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa) and the letter indicated impact properties. For example, grade 43A had a minimum yield strength of 270 MPa, while grade 50D had a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and was also specified to meet specific low-temperature impact toughness requirements.

BS 4360 also included requirements for chemical composition, tensile strength, elongation, and methods of testing. It aimed to ensure the quality and performance of structural steel used in construction, providing a common basis for designers, manufacturers, and fabricators.

It is important to note that BS 4360 has largely been superseded by European Standards, particularly BS EN 10025, which now governs structural steel in the UK and Europe. While BS 4360 is no longer the primary standard for new construction, older structures may have been built to its specifications, and it remains a significant historical document in the development of structural steel standards.
