BDIII

BDIII, also known as Biodiversity III, is a global initiative aimed at conserving and sustainably using biodiversity. It is a follow-up to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which was adopted in 1992. The BDIII process began in 2020 and is expected to conclude in 2025. The initiative is guided by the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2050, which outlines a set of goals and targets for achieving a world where people live in harmony with nature.

The BDIII process involves a series of negotiations and consultations among governments, civil society, and other stakeholders. It aims to strengthen the implementation of the CBD and its agreements, including the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization. The BDIII also seeks to address emerging issues such as climate change, pollution, and invasive species.

One of the key objectives of BDIII is to ensure that biodiversity is valued and recognized in national policies, laws, and budgets. This includes promoting the integration of biodiversity into economic decision-making and the development of sustainable livelihoods. The initiative also aims to enhance the participation of indigenous and local communities in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
