BAFA

BAFA stands for Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle, and in English the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control. It is a German federal authority subordinate to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The agency is responsible for a range of policy tools, including export controls, energy policy measures, and the administration of subsidies aimed at supporting business activity and climate goals.

In export control, BAFA issues licenses for the export of dual-use goods, weapons, and related technologies, and it enforces compliance with German and EU sanctions and foreign trade rules. The agency also monitors and enforces export controls to prevent the proliferation of prohibited goods and technologies.

In energy and climate policy, BAFA administers subsidies and incentive schemes designed to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean heating systems. It manages programs such as subsidies for energy-efficient buildings and heating systems under the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG), as well as the Market Incentive Program for Electric Mobility (Umweltbonus) and support for charging infrastructure. BAFA also provides guidance and information services to applicants and businesses.
