Bázishatásra

Bázishatásra, also known as the base effect, is an economic phenomenon that describes the influence of the previous period's value on the current period's growth rate. It is particularly relevant when discussing inflation rates, GDP growth, or unemployment figures.

The core concept is that a high or low base value in the previous period will exaggerate or dampen the percentage change observed in the current period, respectively. For instance, if inflation was very high in one year, the following year's inflation rate might appear low, even if the actual price increases were significant, simply because it is being compared to an already elevated base. Conversely, if a country's GDP experienced a sharp decline in a previous year, the subsequent year's GDP growth rate might look exceptionally strong, even if the recovery is only moderate, due to the low starting point.
