Axonikuljetus

Axonikuljetus, also known as axoplasmic transport, is a process by which materials are transported along the axons of neurons. This process is crucial for the proper functioning of the nervous system, as it ensures the delivery of necessary components to the synaptic terminals, where neurotransmitters are released to communicate with other neurons or target cells.

There are two main types of axoplasmic transport: anterograde and retrograde. Anterograde transport moves materials from the cell body (soma) towards the axon terminals, while retrograde transport moves materials from the axon terminals back towards the cell body. Both types of transport are essential for maintaining the structural integrity and functional capacity of neurons.

Anterograde transport is responsible for delivering newly synthesized proteins, organelles, and other materials to the synaptic terminals. This transport is facilitated by motor proteins, such as kinesin and dynein, which move along microtubules within the axon. Retrograde transport, on the other hand, is involved in the recycling of synaptic vesicles and other materials from the axon terminals back to the cell body for reuse or degradation.

Axonikuljetus is a continuous process that occurs throughout the life of a neuron. It is regulated by various factors, including the neuron's activity level, metabolic state, and the presence of specific signaling molecules. Disruptions in axoplasmic transport have been linked to several neurological disorders, highlighting its importance in maintaining the health and function of the nervous system.
