Avvikelsemått, translated as deviation measures or dispersion measures in English, are statistical concepts used to quantify the extent of variation or spread of a set of data points around a central value, most commonly the mean. These measures provide insight into how dispersed or clustered the data is. A small deviation measure indicates that the data points are close to the mean, suggesting a homogeneous dataset, while a large measure implies that the data points are spread out over a wider range, indicating a heterogeneous dataset.

Commonly used avvikelsemått include the variance and the standard deviation. Variance is the average of the squared differences from the mean. Squaring the differences ensures that all values are positive and gives more weight to larger deviations. The standard deviation is the square root of the variance. This operation brings the measure back to the original units of the data, making it more interpretable. Another simple measure of dispersion is the range, which is the difference between the maximum and minimum values in the dataset. However, the range is sensitive to outliers and does not consider the distribution of the intermediate values.
