The word is the plural of avustettava, which stems from avustaa meaning “to assist”. The concept is central to Finland’s comprehensive social security system and is designed to support people who are unable to sustain themselves due to age, disability, illness, or unemployment.

Eligibility for avustettavia status is determined by the Finnish Family Aid Act ("Perheavustuslaki") and the Welfare Act ("Sosiaali- ja terveydenhuoltoalan peruslaki").
