Physically, wastewater can increase turbidity, reducing light penetration and affecting aquatic plant life. It can also introduce solid waste, which can smother benthic habitats and harm aquatic organisms. Chemically, wastewater often contains elevated levels of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. When these nutrients enter water bodies, they can lead to eutrophication, a process characterized by excessive algal growth. This algal bloom can deplete dissolved oxygen in the water when the algae decompose, creating hypoxic or anoxic conditions that are detrimental to fish and other aquatic life.

Wastewater can also introduce various pollutants, including heavy metals, organic compounds, and pathogens. Heavy metals can accumulate in the food chain, posing risks to wildlife and human health. Organic compounds can consume dissolved oxygen during their decomposition. Pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, can contaminate water sources and pose significant health risks if the water is used for drinking, recreation, or irrigation.
