Avloppssystems, often translated as sewerage systems or wastewater systems, are essential infrastructure designed to collect and transport domestic, industrial, and commercial wastewater away from populated areas to treatment facilities. The primary purpose of these systems is to protect public health and the environment by preventing the spread of diseases and pollution.

A typical avloppssystem consists of a network of underground pipes, known as sewers, which carry wastewater through gravity or by means of pumping stations. These pipes are carefully laid with a slight gradient to ensure continuous flow. The wastewater collected can include sewage from toilets and bathrooms, as well as water from sinks, showers, and industrial processes.

Once the wastewater reaches its destination, it undergoes treatment at a wastewater treatment plant. The treatment process typically involves several stages, including preliminary treatment to remove large solids, primary treatment to settle out suspended solids, secondary treatment to break down organic matter using biological processes, and sometimes tertiary treatment for further purification.

Without them, untreated wastewater would contaminate water sources, leading to severe health risks and ecological damage.
