Avaruusliikejärjestelmissä, often translated as "space motion systems" or "space propulsion systems," refers to the technologies and methods used to control and change the trajectory of spacecraft. These systems are fundamental to space exploration, enabling satellites to maintain their orbits, probes to travel to distant celestial bodies, and rockets to launch from Earth. The most common type of space propulsion involves expelling mass in one direction to generate thrust in the opposite direction, as described by Newton's third law of motion.

Chemical rockets are the most prevalent propulsion systems, utilizing the rapid combustion of fuel and oxidizer to produce hot gas that is expelled through a nozzle. These systems offer high thrust, making them suitable for launch vehicles and orbital maneuvers. However, they are also relatively inefficient in terms of propellant mass required for long-duration missions.

Electric propulsion systems, on the other hand, use electrical energy to accelerate a propellant to very high speeds. Examples include ion thrusters, Hall-effect thrusters, and resistojets. While these systems produce much lower thrust than chemical rockets, they are significantly more fuel-efficient, making them ideal for deep-space missions, station-keeping of satellites, and orbital adjustments where time is less critical.

Other advanced concepts for space motion systems include solar sails, which use the pressure of sunlight for propulsion, and nuclear thermal propulsion, which heats a propellant using a nuclear reactor. The development of these systems continues to expand the possibilities for space travel and exploration.
