Avainjakomenetelmät, also known as key distribution methods, refer to cryptographic techniques used to securely establish shared secret keys between two or more parties. These secret keys are essential for encrypting and decrypting communication, ensuring confidentiality and integrity.

One fundamental method is symmetric key distribution. In this approach, both parties possess the same secret key, which is used for both encryption and decryption. The challenge lies in securely distributing this key initially. Manual key exchange, where keys are shared through a secure physical channel, is a simple but often impractical method for large-scale systems.

Asymmetric cryptography offers a more scalable solution through public-key cryptography. Key agreement protocols, such as the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, allow two parties to generate a shared secret key over an insecure channel without ever directly exchanging it. Each party generates a public and private key pair. They exchange their public keys, and using their own private key and the other party's public key, they can independently compute the same shared secret.

Another important method involves using a trusted third party, often a key distribution center (KDC). The KDC holds master keys for all users and can issue temporary session keys for secure communication between any two users. This method simplifies key management but relies on the security and availability of the KDC.
