Austroasiaticspeaking is a term used to refer to the peoples who speak languages belonging to the Austroasiatic language family. The family, sometimes called Mon–Khmer, comprises about a dozen major languages and many smaller ones that are spoken across Southeast Asia, parts of South Asia, and the islands of the Indian Ocean. The most widely spoken Austroasiatic languages are Vietnamese, Khmer, and the Mon languages of Myanmar and Thailand. In India and eastern Nepal, several languages of the Munda subgroup are spoken by tribal communities.
