Aurinkovoiteen, commonly known as sunscreen, is a topical product that protects the skin from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It works by either absorbing UV rays or reflecting them away from the skin. There are two main types of sunscreen: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Physical sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, contain mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin and create a physical barrier to block UV rays.

The effectiveness of sunscreen is measured by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which indicates how well it protects against UVB radiation. A higher SPF number means greater protection. It is recommended to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for adequate protection. Sunscreens also offer protection against UVA radiation, which contributes to skin aging and increases the risk of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen generously and reapplying it frequently, especially after swimming or sweating, is crucial for maintaining its protective benefits. Regular use of sunscreen is an important measure in preventing sunburn, premature skin aging, and reducing the risk of developing skin cancer. It is advisable to seek shade and wear protective clothing in addition to using sunscreen when exposed to prolonged sunlight.
