Aurinkolämpövoima, also known as concentrated solar power (CSP), is a technology that uses mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a small area. This concentrated light generates high temperatures, which are then used to produce steam. The steam drives a turbine, which in turn powers a generator to produce electricity. CSP systems are distinct from photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, which convert sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor materials.

There are several types of CSP systems, including parabolic troughs, solar towers, and dish-engine systems. Parabolic troughs use curved mirrors to focus sunlight onto a receiver tube running along the focal line. Solar towers use a field of mirrors (heliostats) to reflect sunlight onto a central receiver at the top of a tower. Dish-engine systems use a parabolic dish to focus sunlight onto a receiver located at the dish's focal point, often powering a Stirling engine.

A key advantage of CSP technology is its ability to store thermal energy, typically in molten salt. This stored heat allows electricity generation to continue even when the sun is not shining, such as at night or during cloudy periods. This dispatchability makes CSP a valuable component of a renewable energy grid, helping to ensure a stable power supply. CSP plants are generally located in sunny regions with large, open land areas. While CSP has a higher initial cost than some other renewable technologies, its ability to store energy and its long operational lifespan can make it cost-competitive over the long term.
