Aulorhynchid

Aulorhynchid is a term that has been used to refer to a family of fish, though its current taxonomic status is debated. Historically, the family Aulorhynchidae was described to include species within the order Gasterosteiformes. These fish are characterized by their elongated bodies and the presence of dorsal spines.

The most well-known member, or at least the species most often associated with this group, is often placed in the genus aulorhynchus. These fish are typically found in marine environments, inhabiting coastal waters. They are known for their peculiar feeding habits and reproductive strategies, which share similarities with other stickleback relatives.

However, modern phylogenetic studies have led to a re-evaluation of the Aulorhynchidae family. Many researchers now consider the species previously assigned to Aulorhynchidae to be part of a broader stickleback family, Gasterosteidae, or to be closely related to it, often placed within a subfamily or considered a distinct but closely related lineage. This reclassification reflects advancements in understanding evolutionary relationships through genetic and morphological data. The term "aulorhynchid" is therefore less frequently used in current ichthyological literature as a formal taxonomic rank.
