Aufrüstung

Aufrüstung, literally armament or militarization in German, denotes the process by which a state increases its military capabilities. It encompasses the procurement of weapons and equipment, modernization of forces, expansion of personnel, and the broader mobilization of industry and infrastructure to support defense needs. The term is used in political and historical contexts to describe efforts aimed at deterrence or power projection, as well as rapid or reflexive buildups in response to perceived threats. It can be voluntary or coerced by external pressure and may involve advances in tech such as missiles, aircraft, naval systems, and cyber capabilities, alongside organizational and strategic reforms.

Historically, Aufrüstung has been central to discussions of the arms races of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the extensive rearmament of Germany in the 1930s, and the strategic buildup during the Cold War. In contemporary policy, it refers to modernization programs, defense procurement, and personnel expansion conducted within the framework of national security strategy and alliance commitments.
