The columns in the table represent different characteristics or attributes of these features.

For example, an attribute table for a layer of roads might have columns for the road name, speed limit, surface type, and the number of lanes. For a layer of buildings, attributes could include the building's address, its primary use, its year of construction, and its owner. These attributes are crucial for analyzing and understanding the spatial data. They allow users to query, filter, and sort geographic features based on their characteristics.

Attribute tables are tightly linked to their corresponding spatial data. This linkage ensures that the descriptive information is directly associated with the correct geographic location or shape. When a user selects a feature on a map, the corresponding row in the attribute table is highlighted, and vice versa. This bidirectional relationship is a core principle of GIS functionality. The data types within attribute tables can vary widely, including text, numbers (integers and decimals), dates, and even binary data. The efficient management and querying of these tables are essential for effective spatial analysis and data visualization.
