Attribuition

Attribuition is a term that is not widely established in formal reference works. In most contexts it is encountered as a misspelling of attribution, the act of ascribing a quality, cause, or source to something, or the process by which readers interpret statements or events. Because of this, attribuition does not denote a distinct, recognized concept in mainstream disciplines.

In some niche or informal uses, attribuition has appeared as a coined term intended to convey a similar idea to attribution—namely, assigning attributes or features to objects, data points, or agents. This usage is nonstandard and not widely adopted, which can lead to ambiguity or confusion when communicating across fields. Given its rarity, most writers rely on attribution or attribute to express the intended meaning.

In practice, attribution is a common and established concept in several areas. In psychology, attribution theory concerns how people explain the causes of events. In data science and marketing, attribution refers to methods for linking outcomes to influencing factors or channels. In publishing and academia, source attribution denotes the practice of acknowledging the origins of information and ideas.
