Atteindrez

Atteindrez is a form of the French verb atteindre, meaning “to reach” or “to attain.” It is the second‐person plural future tense (vous atteindrez) and also the second‐person singular aorist future in older varieties of French. In contemporary standard French, the form is used in formal or literary contexts when addressing more than one person, or when a single person is addressed formally. The present‑simple form for the same grammatical person is “vous atteignez.”

The verb atteindre is irregular: its root changes in the present and past tenses, but the future tense follows a predictable pattern of adding the regular endings to the present stem (atteint‑). The infinitive stems from the Latin *at·terrēre,* which means “to arrive” or “to arrive at.” While the original Latin had a different group name, the French form has retained the root “atteint.” The reflexive form *s’atteindre* is also used in idiomatic expressions such as *s’atteindre à un but* (to accomplish a goal).

In modern usage, the verb is often paired with objects of measurement or ambition, as in *vous atteindrez vos objectifs* (you shall achieve your goals). It also appears in more metaphorical contexts, like *atteindre une conclusion* (to reach a conclusion). The voice switches to passive constructions such as *les objectifs seront atteints* (the goals will be reached) in which the form *atteint* becomes a participial adjective.

Because atteindrez is a tense form rather than a noun, it typically appears in subordinate clauses or conditional sentences. For instance: *Si vous travaillez dur, vous atteinrez vos rêves.* The form is rarely used in everyday spoken French, where simple present (vous atteignez) or informal future (vous allez atteindre) are preferred. Nonetheless, it remains a useful form for formal writing, literature, journalism, and official documents.
