Atoomsoort

Atoomsoort, also known as an element or chemical element, is a fundamental substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Each atoomeenheid (atom) of an atoomsoort has a specific number of protons, known as the atomic number, which uniquely identifies it. The properties of an atoomsoort, including its reactivity, state, and appearance, are determined by its atomic structure.

Elements are the building blocks of matter and are organized in the periodic table, which groups elements based on similar chemical properties. There are currently 118 recognized elements, ranging from hydrogen (atomic number 1) to oganesson (atomic number 118). These elements can exist in various states—solid, liquid, or gas—under different conditions.

Atoomsoorten are classified into metals, nonmetals, and metalloids, depending on their physical and chemical properties. Metals, which make up a significant portion of the periodic table, are typically good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, and ductile. Nonmetals tend to be poor conductors and are often brittle in solid form, while metalloids display properties intermediate between metals and nonmetals.
