Atmosfäärikihtidele is the term used to describe the different layers of the Earth's atmosphere, which can be divided into five main regions based on temperature changes with altitude. These layers are crucial for life on Earth and play a significant role in various atmospheric processes.

The first layer is the troposphere, which extends from the Earth's surface to an average height of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) at the poles and 17 kilometers (10.6 miles) at the equator. This is the layer where most weather phenomena occur, including thunderstorms. The temperature typically decreases with altitude in this layer.

Above the troposphere lies the stratosphere, which reaches up to about 50 kilometers (31 miles). The stratosphere is known for its stable temperature, which increases with altitude due to the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by ozone. This layer is home to the ozone layer, which shields the Earth from harmful solar radiation.

The mesosphere, extending from about 50 to 85 kilometers (31 to 53 miles), is the layer where most meteors burn up upon entering the atmosphere. The temperature decreases with altitude in this layer.

The thermosphere, ranging from about 85 to 640 kilometers (53 to 400 miles), is ionized by solar radiation, giving it a distinctive red glow during daylight hours. This layer is crucial for satellite operations and global positioning systems like GPS.

Finally, the exosphere, the outermost layer of the atmosphere, extends from about 640 kilometers (400 miles) to beyond 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles). It gradually transitions into interplanetary space. The exosphere contains most of the atmosphere's mass but is very thin.

Each of these layers plays a unique role in the Earth's atmospheric system, contributing to the complex interplay of gases, particles, and energy that sustains life on our planet.
