Athiratil

Athiratil is a town and administrative municipality in the western highlands of the fictional nation of Nalara. Set on the banks of the Athira River, it forms a regional commercial center and serves as the administrative seat of Athiratil District.

Geographically, Athiratil sits at an elevation around 900 meters, with a landscape of terraced rice paddies, pine forests, and smallholdings. The climate is temperate, with a wet season from June to September and a cooler dry season.

Historically, Athiratil grew as a trading post in the late medieval period, benefitting from river commerce and regional craft guilds. The Old Fort, built in the 16th century, remains a symbol of the town’s historical role in the region.

The economy centers on agriculture—primarily rice, maize, and vegetables—along with livestock and textiles. A weekly market draws traders from surrounding areas, while small manufacturing and growing tourism contribute to local income.

Population and culture: As of 2022, the municipality was estimated to have about 22,500 residents. The community is linguistically diverse, with Nalari as the dominant language alongside minority dialects. Local culture emphasizes crafts, seasonal festivals, and markets.

Infrastructure and governance: Athiratil is governed by a town council and a district administrator. It is connected by regional roads and a rail spur to the national capital, with public services including a hospital, several schools, and a regional library.

Notable sites include the Old Fort and the Temple of Lira, which together anchor the town’s historical district, and the weekly Athiratil Market, which remains a focal point of civic life.
