Athenodoros

Athenodoros was a prominent Stoic philosopher who lived from circa 74 BC to AD 7. He was a native of the city of Tarsus in Cilicia. Athenodoros was a student of Posidonius and became a highly influential figure in the Stoic school, even teaching Emperor Augustus.

His philosophical teachings focused on ethics and the practical application of Stoic principles to daily life. Athenodoros emphasized the importance of reason, virtue, and living in accordance with nature. He also wrote on a variety of topics, though much of his work has been lost. Surviving fragments and references in later authors give us insight into his thought, which often touched upon political philosophy and the education of rulers.

Athenodoros' influence extended beyond philosophy into politics. He served as an advisor to Augustus, offering guidance on matters of state. His belief in the importance of good governance and the cultivation of virtuous leaders is evident in his philosophical writings. He is credited with advising Augustus to avoid public office in his youth, a piece of advice that may have contributed to Augustus's eventual success. Athenodoros's legacy lies in his role as a key transmitter of Stoic philosophy and his practical application of its principles to the complexities of political life.
