Asteroidology is the scientific study of asteroids, which are small, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun. These celestial objects are remnants from the early solar system, formed at the same time as the planets but never accumulating enough mass to become planets themselves. Asteroidology encompasses a wide range of research, including the origin, composition, structure, and evolution of asteroids. Scientists investigate asteroids to understand the conditions of the primitive solar nebula, the building blocks of planets, and the history of planetary formation.

The study involves analyzing asteroid properties through various methods. Telescopic observations, both ground-based and space-based, provide information on their size, shape, rotation, and orbital characteristics. M-type asteroids are predominantly metallic, likely fragments of differentiated parent bodies.
