Asteroccephalus

Asteroccephalus is a genus of prehistoric marine reptiles belonging to the Mosasauridae family. These large, predatory lizards inhabited the oceans during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 90 to 66 million years ago. Fossils attributed to Asteroccephalus have been discovered in various locations worldwide, indicating a widespread distribution across the ancient seas.

The genus is characterized by its robust build and powerful jaws, equipped with numerous sharp teeth adapted for capturing and consuming prey. Like other mosasaurs, Asteroccephalus possessed a streamlined body, paddle-like limbs for propulsion, and a long, flattened tail that likely aided in steering and maneuverability. Their exact size varied, but some species are estimated to have reached lengths of over 10 meters. The diet of Asteroccephalus likely included fish, ammonites, and possibly other marine reptiles. Their evolutionary placement within the mosasaurid family tree suggests they were advanced members of this diverse group, existing shortly before their eventual extinction alongside the non-avian dinosaurs.
