Asmanex

Asmanex is the brand name for inhaled mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid used for the long-term control of asthma. It is not a rescue inhaler and should be taken regularly to reduce airway inflammation. Asmanex is available in two main delivery systems: the dry powder inhaler Asmanex Twisthaler and the metered-dose inhaler Asmanex HFA. Both forms deliver mometasone furoate directly to the lungs to help prevent asthma symptoms in adults and in school-age children with persistent asthma.

Mometasone furoate exerts its effect by reducing inflammatory processes in the airways, including decreased production of cytokines and recruitment of inflammatory cells. This leads to lower airway hyperresponsiveness and fewer asthma symptoms over time. When used at recommended doses, systemic exposure is limited, though higher doses or prolonged use can increase the risk of systemic effects.

Administration and dosing are determined by age and asthma severity and should be guided by a clinician. Patients should use the inhaler on a regular schedule and not as a rescue remedy. Correct inhaler technique is important; rinsing the mouth after inhalation can reduce the risk of oral thrush and hoarseness. Dose adjustments should be made only under medical supervision.

Common adverse effects include local symptoms such as hoarseness, cough, and oral thrush. At high doses, potential systemic effects may include adrenal suppression, slowed growth in children, and rare effects on bone density or ocular pressure. Mometasone furoate is metabolized by CYP3A4; strong inhibitors can increase systemic exposure. Patients should discuss all medications and health conditions with their clinician before starting Asmanex.
