Asinara

Asinara, or Isola di Asinara, is an Italian island located in the Gulf of Asinara off the northwest coast of Sardinia. It lies in the region of Sardinia and is part of the province of Sassari. The island is a national park and forms a protected coastal and marine area, reflecting its status as a significant natural and cultural site.

Geographically, Asinara covers about 52 square kilometers and features a rugged coastline with coves, sandy beaches, and limestone cliffs. The interior is mostly undeveloped, with scrubland, sparse woodlands, and small settlements. The surrounding waters are part of the park’s marine protection, supporting diverse marine life and habitats.

Historically, Asinara has been inhabited since ancient times and was later used as a state prison, with facilities established on the island in the 19th and 20th centuries. After the prison era ended in the late 20th century, the island was designated as Parco Nazionale Isola di Asinara in 1997, and its historical structures were repurposed for conservation and public access. The old prison complex remains a focal point for visitors exploring the island’s heritage.

Flora and fauna are central to the park’s conservation goals. The island is best known for the Asinara white donkeys, an endangered breed preserved within the protected area. The park protects native plant communities, birds, and other wildlife, as well as the surrounding marine ecosystems.

Access to Asinara is by ferry from ports such as Porto Torres or Stintino, with guided tours and limited routes to minimize environmental impact. The island’s isolation and protected status help maintain its relatively pristine landscape and biodiversity.
