Asfalttisekoituksissa refers to asphalt mixtures, which are composite materials used primarily for paving roads, highways, and other surfaces. These mixtures are engineered to provide a durable, safe, and smooth riding surface. The fundamental components of asphalt mixtures are aggregate, asphalt binder, and often fillers. Aggregate consists of various sizes of crushed stone, gravel, and sand, which form the structural skeleton of the pavement. The asphalt binder, typically a bitumen product derived from petroleum, acts as the glue that holds the aggregate particles together. Fillers, such as mineral dust, can be added to improve the mixture's properties, particularly its stiffness and resistance to deformation.

The design of asphalt mixtures involves carefully selecting the proportions and types of these components to achieve desired performance characteristics. These characteristics include strength, durability, flexibility, resistance to rutting (permanent deformation under traffic loads), cracking (both fatigue cracking and thermal cracking), and skid resistance. Different types of asphalt mixtures exist, varying in their composition and intended application. Common types include dense-graded mixtures, which have a high proportion of fine aggregate and a low void content, suitable for most traffic conditions. Open-graded mixtures, with larger aggregate and higher void content, are often used for their drainage properties, reducing hydroplaning. Stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is another type known for its exceptional durability and resistance to rutting, characterized by a high proportion of coarse aggregate and a mastic binder.

The production of asphalt mixtures typically occurs in an asphalt mixing plant, where aggregates are heated and dried, then combined with heated asphalt binder and any additives. This hot mix is then transported to the construction site, laid in layers, and compacted using rollers to achieve the required density and smoothness. Cold mix asphalt is also produced, often used for patching and less demanding applications, where aggregates and binders are mixed at ambient temperatures. The performance and longevity of asphalt pavements are directly dependent on the quality and proper design of the asphalt mixtures used.
