Aschenputtel

Aschenputtel is a German fairy tale. It was first published in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm in their collection Children's and Household Tales. The story is a classic rags-to-riches tale featuring a mistreated heroine who eventually finds happiness.

The protagonist, Aschenputtel, is a young girl whose father remarries after her mother's death. Her stepmother and two stepsisters are cruel and force her to do all the household chores, giving her the nickname "Aschenputtel" because she is often covered in ashes. Despite her harsh treatment, Aschenputtel remains kind and gentle.

A royal ball is announced, and the king invites all eligible young ladies. The stepmother and stepsisters go, but Aschenputtel is forbidden to attend. However, a magical bird, often depicted as a dove or robin, helps her. It grants her a beautiful gown, slippers, and a carriage. Aschenputtel attends the ball, captivating the prince. She flees at midnight, leaving behind one of her golden slippers.

The prince, determined to find the mysterious woman, declares he will marry whoever fits the slipper. The stepsisters try but fail. When Aschenputtel tries, the slipper fits perfectly. She reveals the matching slipper, and the prince recognizes her. They marry and live happily ever after. The story emphasizes themes of perseverance, inner goodness, and the eventual triumph of virtue over cruelty.
