Arverne

Arverne is a residential neighborhood on the western portion of the Rockaway Peninsula in the borough of Queens, New York City. It lies along the Atlantic Ocean and is part of Queens Community District 14. The area is bordered by other Rockaway communities and is known for its oceanfront blocks and mix of housing types.

Arverne began to form as part of the Rockaway Beach resort era in the early 20th century, with development expanding through the 1910s and 1920s. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the beachfront portion underwent a major redevelopment known as Arverne-by-the-Sea, bringing new homes, retail space, and public areas.

The neighborhood is predominantly residential and diverse, with a range of housing stock including single-family homes, row houses, and low-rise apartments. It has continued to attract redevelopment and investment as part of broader Rockaway Peninsula renewal.

Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused extensive flooding and damage to Arverne and surrounding communities. Recovery efforts included housing reconstruction, flood mitigation, and infrastructure improvements intended to increase resilience against future storms.

Public transit serves Arverne through the local bus network and connections to the wider MTA system that serves the Rockaway Peninsula, linking residents to points across Queens and to Brooklyn and Manhattan via the A Line. It remains a coastal community with access to beaches, parks, and neighborhood services.
