Archaeocyaths

Archaeocyaths (archaeocyathids) are an extinct group of cup-shaped, calcareous organisms that inhabited shallow marine environments during the early to middle Cambrian. They are among the earliest known reef builders and contributed significantly to Cambrian carbonate platforms. Fossils are found worldwide, and abundant in early Cambrian strata, where they form hollow, cone-like skeletons that contributed to the developing reef biosphere.

Morphology: The typical archaeocyath skeleton consists of two porous walls—a outer and an inner cup—joined by a lattice of radial elements. The walls are perforated and enclose a central cavity that communicates with the outside through pore networks. The overall morphology ranges from simple to highly ornamented cups; some forms show sequential stacking that created a colonial framework.

Ecology: Archaeocyaths were sessile, filter-feeding organisms attached to the seafloor. Their porous skeletons created three-dimensional frameworks that hosted other Cambrian metazoans as part of the early reef community.

Taxonomy and significance: The exact phylogenetic position of Archaeocyatha is debated; they are commonly treated as a primitive, sponge-like animal group with a distinctive calcareous skeleton, sometimes placed as a separate phylum. They disappeared by the middle to late Cambrian as other reef builders—such as calcareous sponges and corals—became dominant. Their rapid appearance and distinctive skeletons make them valuable index fossils for Cambrian strata and early reef development.
