Arbeidshøyden

Arbeidshøyden refers to the altitude at which a person can function without supplemental oxygen. This concept is most relevant in aviation and mountaineering, where exposure to thin air poses a significant physiological challenge. The effects of altitude on the human body are primarily due to reduced partial pressure of oxygen, leading to hypoxia. At lower altitudes, the body can compensate for the decreased oxygen levels. However, as altitude increases, the body's ability to extract sufficient oxygen from the air diminishes.

Different altitudes present distinct risks. For example, at altitudes above 10,000 feet (approximately 3,050 meters), cognitive impairment and fatigue can begin to set in, marking the beginning of what is often termed "significant altitude." Above 14,000 feet (approximately 4,270 meters), the need for supplemental oxygen becomes critical for most individuals to maintain normal bodily functions and consciousness. Prolonged exposure to very high altitudes, such as above 25,000 feet (approximately 7,620 meters), is generally considered unsurvivable without specialized equipment and acclimatization.
