Aproximaatio is a term derived from the Latin word "approximare," meaning "to come near." It refers to the act or process of approximating something, which involves representing a complex or precise value, object, or concept with a simpler or less exact one. This simplification is done with the understanding that the approximation will not be perfectly accurate but will be sufficiently close for a particular purpose.

The concept of aproximaatio is fundamental across various fields. In mathematics, it is used extensively in numerical analysis, where exact solutions to equations are often difficult or impossible to find. Approximation techniques allow mathematicians to estimate these solutions with a desired degree of accuracy. For example, the value of pi is an irrational number, but it is frequently approximated by fractions like 22/7 or decimals like 3.14159 for practical calculations.

In science and engineering, approximations are essential for modeling real-world phenomena. Complex systems are often simplified to make them mathematically tractable.
