Apatitiryhmän refers to a group of phosphate minerals characterized by their hexagonal crystal structure and the general chemical formula A5(XO4)3Z, where A represents cations like calcium, strontium, barium, or lead, X is typically phosphorus, and Z is a halide like fluoride, chloride, or hydroxide. The most common and well-known member of this group is apatite, specifically hydroxyapatite, which is a primary mineral component of vertebrate teeth and bones.

Other significant minerals within the apatite group include fluorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chlorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3Cl). These minerals are found in a wide range of geological environments, from igneous and metamorphic rocks to sedimentary deposits. They can also occur as accessory minerals in many ore deposits.

Apatite group minerals are relatively hard and have a Mohs hardness typically between 5 and 5.5. They exhibit various colors, often depending on trace impurities, and can be translucent to opaque. Due to their widespread occurrence and relative abundance, apatite group minerals have several industrial applications. Phosphate fertilizers, derived from mined apatite, are crucial for agriculture. Apatite is also used in the production of ceramics, glass, and as a source of phosphorus for other chemical processes. In dentistry and medicine, hydroxyapatite is utilized in biomaterials for bone regeneration and dental restorations because of its biocompatibility.
