Aorttaläpp, also known as the aortic valve, is a crucial component of the human heart. It is one of the four valves that ensure unidirectional blood flow through the heart chambers and into the major arteries. Specifically, the aortic valve is situated between the left ventricle of the heart and the aorta, the main artery that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Its primary function is to open during each heartbeat, allowing blood to be pumped from the left ventricle into the aorta, and then to close tightly to prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricle. The aortic valve is a semilunar valve, meaning it has three crescent-shaped leaflets or cusps. These leaflets are made of strong, flexible connective tissue. When the left ventricle contracts, the pressure within it rises, forcing the aortic valve to open. As the ventricle relaxes, the pressure drops, and the blood in the aorta pushes the leaflets back together, sealing the valve. Problems with the aortic valve can lead to significant health issues. Aortic stenosis occurs when the valve narrows or stiffens, restricting blood flow and forcing the heart to work harder. Aortic regurgitation, on the other hand, happens when the valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak back into the left ventricle. Both conditions can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, and dizziness, and may require medical intervention, including medication or surgery to repair or replace the valve.
