Antycholinergiczne, or anticholinergic, refers to a class of substances that block the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential for various bodily functions. Acetylcholine plays a crucial role in the parasympathetic nervous system, influencing processes such as heart rate, digestion, and muscle contraction. Anticholinergic drugs achieve their effects by binding to and inhibiting muscarinic acetylcholine receptors.

These medications have a wide range of therapeutic applications. They are often prescribed to treat conditions like Parkinson's disease, where they can help manage tremors and rigidity. Anticholinergics are also used to alleviate symptoms of overactive bladder by relaxing bladder muscles, and in some respiratory conditions, like asthma and COPD, to open airways. They can also be used to treat motion sickness and as pre-anesthetic medications to reduce secretions.

However, due to their mechanism of action, anticholinergic substances can also cause a variety of side effects. These often include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, and drowsiness. In higher doses or in susceptible individuals, they can lead to more serious effects such as confusion, memory problems, hallucinations, and an increased heart rate. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to these adverse effects. Due to the potential for significant side effects and interactions with other medications, anticholinergic drugs should always be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
