Antioksidanttijärjestelmiään refers to the complex network of defense mechanisms within living organisms that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cellular components like DNA, proteins, and lipids, contributing to aging and various diseases. Organisms have evolved sophisticated systems to neutralize these harmful molecules.

These systems can be broadly categorized into enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. Enzymatic antioxidants include enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, which directly convert free radicals into less harmful substances. Non-enzymatic antioxidants are molecules like vitamins C and E, carotenoids, and flavonoids, which can directly scavenge free radicals or regenerate other antioxidants.

The balance between the production of free radicals and the capacity of these antioxidant systems is crucial for cellular health. When this balance is disrupted, leading to an overproduction of free radicals or a depletion of antioxidant defenses, a state of oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, and inflammatory conditions.

Maintaining adequate levels of both endogenous and exogenous (dietary) antioxidants is therefore considered important for overall health and disease prevention. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides a diverse array of antioxidants that can support the body's natural defense mechanisms against oxidative damage.
